Petit Hotel Fromage, located in Ito City, Izu Kogen, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a small inn with 4 rooms where cat-loving owners provide time to interact with their beloved cats. In addition to the cats, the inn also focuses on dinners that use kinmedai (splendid alfonsino) and Izu beef.
The official website explicitly states that there are two opportunities to meet the cat: about one hour after dinner and a farewell at check-out. Since the contact rules are specific and interaction inside the inn can be confirmed, the inn is classified as B on our website.
“Cat time” after dinner
Official website says that guests can meet the inn’s cats for about an hour after dinner and when the cats see guests off at check-out. Rather than a cat inn where cats are allowed to walk freely inside the inn all the time, this is a method of dividing their interaction time while reducing the burden on the cats.
The official cat introduction includes Miu, who is good at catching snacks and can be held, which was introduced on TV, Candy, who is friendly and can sometimes sit on your shoulder, and Yuki, a silver chinchilla. It is also clearly stated that the former resident cat Hotaru passed away in 2023, so please note the difference from the old introduction article.
The introduction that there are cats that can be held does not mean that you can hold any cat at any time. Prioritize the cat’s wishes and the staff’s guidance on the day.
Touching etiquette to protect cats
Fromage provides specific guidance on how to interact with cats. This includes avoiding loud voices and loud footsteps, avoiding chasing or forcing the cat into your arms, washing and disinfecting your hands before touching the cats, and refraining from wearing strong perfumes.
These rules are not to restrict guests’ freedom, but to protect the cats’ health, reduce stress, and keep offering interaction time. The inn may omit cat time for guests who are uncomfortable around cats, so be sure to confirm the wishes of everyone in your party before making a reservation.
There is no confirmed official information that cats enter guest rooms. The inn suits guests who want to interact with resident cats in a managed common space, rather than those seeking a night with a cat in their room.
Dinner with kinmedai (splendid alfonsino) and Izu beef
Typical dinner plans include a boat-shaped platter of local-fish sashimi, a whole simmered kinmedai, 100% Izu beef hamburger, fried shrimp and crab, and dessert. The kinmedai is cooked to coincide with the start of the meal, with an emphasis on making the most of ingredients from the waters around Izu.
The official guidance suggests substantial portions and advises a light lunch. Dishes vary with the plan and available ingredients. Discuss food allergies and portion sizes with the inn before booking, rather than at the last minute.
4 guest rooms and private bath
According to guest room information, there are 4 guest rooms in total, each with a bath, toilet, and sink. There are 3 types of rooms. The inn also has a bath that can be reserved for private use, and you can reserve a time when you check in.
Because it is located in a villa area in the Izu Highlands surrounded by forests, it is suitable for a stay where you can enjoy meals, baths, and cat time at the inn rather than trying to do sightseeing.
Things to check before making a reservation
- The basic time to meet the cats is about 1 hour after dinner and at check-out.
- You may not be able to meet or the time may change depending on the cats’ physical condition.
- Avoid excessive hugging, chasing, loud voices, and strong perfumes.
- There is no confirmed official information that cats visit guest rooms.
- If you don’t like cats, you can let the inn know that you don’t want to interact with them.
- Please check the amount of food, allergies, and how to use the private bath.
Access
Travel from Izu Kogen Station is mainly by car. The roads within the villa area have branches, so it’s best to check the official access guide and plan to arrive before dark. The official FAQ states that no shuttle service is provided. If taking a taxi from Izu Kogen Station, check current operating conditions.
