What is Nekoyado? Differences between accommodations with resident cats, accommodations where you can stay with cats, and accommodations with cat cafes

“Nekoyado” is not a standardized facility classification by law or industry. The search results include facilities with different purposes, such as inns where you can meet resident cats who live there, inns where you can stay with your own cat, and inns with cat cafes and shelters for cats.

Neko Yado Research’s attitude when introducing Nekoyado is published in What Neko Yado Research values.

If you make a reservation based only on the word’s impressions, you may end up making misunderstandings such as, “I wanted to see a cat, but it was a pet-friendly facility,” or “I thought I could bring my cat.” What matters is to check whose cats spend time where, and how guests may interact, rather than relying on the name of the accommodation type.

1. Accommodations with resident cats

This is an inn where cats who live with the innkeepers can be seen in the lobby, dining room, garden, etc. This is the type that Neko Yado Research mainly introduces.

However, the presence of a resident cat is not the same as the fact that guests can freely interact with it. At some inns the cats may visit guest rooms; at others you can meet them only in shared areas, or see them without confirmed interaction. Depending on the cat’s health, age, and season, there may be days when you can’t meet.

The points you want to check are:

  • Current information on cats living at the inn
  • Where and when cats spend their time
  • Possibility of entering guest room and applicable plans
  • Rules for holding, snacks, toys, and photography
  • Notice that you may not be able to meet the cat

At Neko Yado Research, the distance to cats is organized into three levels: A, B, and C Reference. This does not indicate the superiority or inferiority of the accommodation, but rather represents the range of interactions that have been confirmed.

2. Accommodation where you can stay with your cat

This is an inn where travelers can bring their cats with them. Even if it says “pets allowed,” it may only be for dogs, so check to see if cats are also eligible.

Conditions vary by accommodation, including proof of vaccinations and health status, number of animals, cages, litter boxes, leaving the cat unattended, and how to move around common areas. In addition to whether or not there is escape prevention equipment, you also need to consider whether your cat will feel burdened by moving around or in an unfamiliar environment.

This type of accommodation does not necessarily have a resident cat. Even if the inn has a resident cat, do not assume you may introduce your own cat to it. Cats may have separate living areas to avoid infections and tension between them.

3. An inn with a cat cafe/cat-only space

This type of accommodation includes a cat room, cat cafe, and space for interacting with rescue cats. While it is easy to understand where and when you can meet cats, there may be terms and conditions that are separate from the accommodation fee.

Things to check are opening hours, age restrictions, clothing such as socks, re-entry policy, photography, treats, and reservation slots. Do not reach into staff-only back areas or high places where cats rest, and follow facility instructions.

4. Accommodations tied to animal rescue activities

There are a variety of mechanisms, including facilities where rescue cats live, inns that support animal rescue activities, and inns that allocate a portion of lodging profits to support animal rescue. The term “rescue cat” alone does not necessarily mean that you will be able to interact with all the cats or apply for adoption during your stay.

Check the official information about the cat’s living space and accommodation area, purpose of interaction, donation and adoption procedures, and operating body. It is also necessary not to consume the rescue background as entertainment and to respect the cat’s choice to stay away from people.

5. An inn with a cat motif

Even if the theme is cat figurines, pictures, books, guest room names, etc., there are some inns that do not have live cats. It’s a fun place to stay for cat lovers, but it’s not an inn where you can meet resident cats.

Even if a cat appears in the photo on the reservation site, it does not necessarily mean that it is currently living at the inn. Read the description and update date, as it could be an old photo, a neighbor’s cat, or a temporary cat.

Choose from your own purpose

Before looking for a place to stay, it will be easier to choose one if you decide what you want to focus on on your trip.

Purpose Search type Things to check first
I want to meet the resident cat at the inn Resident cat / Inn with resident cat Where to meet and current status
I want to travel with my cat Accommodations that allow cats Cat acceptance conditions and escape prevention
Want to interact in a fixed space Accommodation with cat lounge, etc. Usage hours, age, and reservation conditions
I want to support rescue cat activities Inns that collaborate with activities Management details and support methods
Want to enjoy the world of cats Inns with cat motifs Availability of live cats

Some accommodations fall under more than one category. Don’t decide based on the classification name alone; check the equipment and operation one by one.

Change the words you use when searching

If you can’t find anything using just “Nekoyado”, change the search term to suit your purpose.

  • resident cat inn area name
  • inn cat ryokan area name
  • Cat-friendly accommodation area name
  • Cat Lounge Hotel Area Name
  • rescue cat accommodation area name

Search results may not be the latest information. Finally, check the inn’s official website, official SNS, and reservation page.

Summary

The term Nekoyado is convenient, but it does not guarantee the contents of the facility. The accommodation you choose and the questions you ask will depend on whether you want to meet the inn’s cats, stay with your own cat, or interact with them in a dedicated facility.
