When reserving a cat inn, you are not only concerned about the price and meals, but also “Where can I meet the resident cat?” and “Is there a possibility that the cat will come to the guest room?” However, asking too many questions can put a burden on the inn, and depending on how you ask them, it may come across as a request to guarantee contact with the cat.
The basic thing is to first read the official website, reservation page, official SNS, and FAQ, and check only what you still don’t understand. Here, we will introduce 10 items that will be helpful when choosing a cat accommodation, as well as some concise sample questions.
- 1. Is the resident cat still living at the inn?
- 2. Where and when are you likely to meet cats?
- 3. Does the cat ever come to the guest room?
- 4. What are the rules for touching?
- 5. Can I take and publish photos and videos?
- 6. Can I bring cat treats and toys?
- 7. Is there anything you can do for companions who are allergic to cats or don’t like cats?
- 8. Can children interact with cats?
- 9. What are the current conditions for meals, check-in, and transportation?
- 10. Where can I change/cancel my reservation and check official information?

1. Is the resident cat still living at the inn?
Articles and reviews about Nekoyado may contain information from several years ago. Which cats live at an inn, their names, and their number can change, so don’t make decisions based only on old information.
Example question:
I read about your resident cat on the official website. Does the cat still live at the inn? I understand that guests may not be able to meet the cat because of its health or other circumstances.
Rather than asking “Can I meet the cat?”, ask whether the cat currently lives at the inn and what the inn currently explains. This is less likely to sound like a request for guaranteed contact.
2. Where and when are you likely to meet cats?
The places where cats spend their time, such as the lobby, dining room, garden, and cat-only space, vary depending on the inn. Some accommodations have set meeting times.
Example question:
Please let us know if there is any current guidance regarding the locations and times when guests may be able to meet resident cats.
Because the cat’s behavior changes from day to day, you may not be able to meet them even if you ask about a specific time. Plan your schedule within the arrangements described by the inn.
3. Does the cat ever come to the guest room?
There is a difference between “an inn with cats” and “an inn where cats sometimes come to the guest room.” Guest-room visits may be limited to specific rooms, plans, and times.
Example question:
Can a resident cat enter the guest room? Please let us know if there are any rules regarding the target guest room, plan, and door handling.
Even in hotels where cats come to the room, we do not ask for a guarantee as the visit is up to the cat’s own will. On the other hand, if you do not want the cat to be in the guest room, discuss this with the inn when booking.
4. What are the rules for touching?
Check the rules regarding cuddles, treats, toys, and access to cat-only areas. The parts of the body that can be touched may differ for each cat.
Example question:
Are there any rules that guests should follow when interacting with cats? We plan not to pick up the cats or give them treats and will prioritize the guidance provided on the day.
Even if there is no explanation from the accommodation, avoid chasing the cat, reaching into its hiding place, or forcibly picking it up. Please also check How to interact with cats before traveling.
5. Can I take and publish photos and videos?
Even if you are allowed to take photos, there may be different rules for videos, shared spaces, SNS publishing, and commercial use.
Example question:
Can I take a photo of the resident cat without a flash and post it on my personal SNS? If there is a place or time when it is not possible to take pictures, I will comply.
Separate consent is required if other guests or staff are included in the photo. For more details, see the summary of Photography etiquette at cat accommodation.
6. Can I bring cat treats and toys?
Even products for cats are related to dietary restrictions, medication, accidental ingestion, and fighting between cats. Do not give the cat anything brought in without permission.
Example question:
I plan to visit without bringing cat treats or toys, but please let me know if there are any petting items that are allowed at the inn.
If your accommodation provides special treats or toys, follow the instructions for their use.
7. Is there anything you can do for companions who are allergic to cats or don’t like cats?
At an inn where cats roam freely inside the inn, it may not be possible to completely separate the guest room and common areas. Do not make the self-judgment that ‘it’s okay as long as you don’t let the cat in the room,’ but check the cleaning, zoning, and guest room operations of the inn.
Example question:
My companion is allergic to cats. Please let me know about guest rooms and areas where cats do not enter, and the extent to which I can be provided information regarding cleaning.
Health-related decisions are not made by the inn; instead, consult with a medical institution as needed. If you have experienced severe symptoms, please carefully consider whether an accommodation that requires contact with cats is appropriate.
8. Can children interact with cats?
Some accommodations have age restrictions, conditions for accompanying a guardian, and conditions for using a cat-only space. Even if a child wants to hold a cat, the rules regarding accommodation and cats take precedence.
Example question:
I am planning to stay as a family including elementary school students. Are there any age or guardian-accompanied requirements for interacting with cats?
Before staying overnight, share with your family the following rules: not to chase cats, not to wake sleeping cats, and not to open doors without permission.
9. What are the current conditions for meals, check-in, and transportation?
When you focus on cats, it’s easy to overlook normal accommodation conditions. In mountainous areas and hot spring areas, meals may not be served after the dinner start time, or advance reservations may be required for transportation.
What to check:
- Meals included/no meals included
- Last check-in time
- Nearest station or bus stop
- Shuttle reservation deadline and operating conditions
- Winter roads and parking lots
- Nearby restaurants and convenience stores
List of cat accommodations allows you to narrow down your search by attributes such as walking from the station, shuttle service, car recommended, and nearby restaurants.
10. Where can I change/cancel my reservation and check official information?
Even if the cat’s health or whether it still lives at the inn changes, the cancellation conditions of the accommodation contract will usually apply. You may not be able to cancel for free just because you couldn’t meet the cat.
Before booking, check the inn’s cancellation policy and where it publishes current information.
Example question:
Should I check the official website or official SNS for business information after making a reservation and the latest status of the Resident Cat?
Neko Yado Research articles also include links to official SNS, but for final confirmation regarding reservations and business hours, please use the inn’s official information.
Example of inquiry text
Instead of asking everything at once, choose only the items you need for your reservation.
I am considering a stay for 1 adult on ○ month ○ day. I saw the information about the resident cat on the official website. I understand that I may not be able to meet the cat because of its health or other circumstances. Could you please tell me where guests may currently be able to meet the cats and the rules for taking photos? If it has already been posted on the official page, it would be helpful if you could let us know where it is posted.
Avoid busy times at the inn and do not rush replies. For inns that accept enquiries only by phone, avoid calling during meal preparation and check-in times.
Things you don’t have to ask
Questions like the following ask the inn to guarantee the cat’s behavior.
- What time should I go to be sure to see a cat?
- Could you please bring the cat to my room?
- Could you please let me hold the cat?
- Can you wake up the cat for a photo?
- I’m looking for a cat, so if I can’t meet it, will I get a refund?
Cats are sometimes introduced as inn staff, but they do not provide customer service according to fixed working hours.
Answers will change even after the trip
The information confirmed at the time of reservation is the information at that time. The arrangements on the day of your stay may change because of the cat’s health, the season, or the inn’s operations.
After arriving, ask the inn for its current explanation and follow the guidance given that day over the answers received when booking. When writing on SNS or reviews after your trip, adding the confirmation date will make it difficult for future guests to accept old information as fixed information.
Summary
When contacting a cat inn, the purpose is not to get a guarantee that you can meet the cat, but to understand the current rules regarding the inn and cats.
Read the official information first and ask only the questions you need for your stay. Be open to the possibility that the cat’s behavior may change, and remember normal accommodation requirements such as food and transportation. This preparation will help you stay calm on the day.
