“Maruhon Ryokan” in Kazamaura Village, Shimokita District, Aomori Prefecture is a small hot spring inn that has been in operation for over 130 years in Shimofuro Onsenkyo, the northernmost hot spring town on Honshu. Inside the inn lives a resident cat, Detchi-kun, who has the title of “Sales Manager.”

It is still featured as an inn where Detchi-kun welcomes you in the “Heartful Hot Spring Journey” guided by Kazamaura Village. This is an inn where you can not only meet cats, but also enjoy the combination of historic wooden buildings, hot springs, and seafood from the Tsugaru Strait.

Sales manager resident cat Detchi-kun

In Kazamaura Village’s current hot springs guide, Detchi-kun is introduced as “Maruhon Ryokan Sales Manager” and is listed as a resident cat who greets guests. We have written this article so that you can check the current information about living in an inn through the official lodging plans of the area.

On the other hand, the current location of Detchi-kun, where he is allowed to be touched, whether he can be held, and the current operation of entering the guest room cannot be confirmed on the inn’s official website or in the village information. In past accommodation records, there are examples of people walking inside the inn and coming to the guest room, but there is no guarantee that they will be doing the same thing now.

Therefore, Neko Yado Research classifies it as C “meeting a resident cat (unconfirmed contact)”. If you are expecting guest-room visits, please do not rely solely on past experiences, but rather check directly with the inn before making a reservation.

Prioritize Detchi-kun’s will and safety

Resident cats are not staff members who serve customers at fixed times. Depending on your physical condition, mood, and time of day, you may not show up. When you see Detchi-kun, do not chase him, but wait for him to approach you.

Prioritize preventing cats from escaping at the entrance, and follow the inn’s instructions when opening/closing the door and entering/exiting. It is important not to leave the door open to carry items or to make any calls to the cat to lead it outside.

Do not use flash when taking photos, and check with the inn first if you want snacks, cat play, or cuddles. If the cat tries to leave, clear the path and avoid entering the area where the cat is resting.

Founded in 1887, a small inn with all Japanese-style rooms.

According to the official website, Maruhon Ryokan was established in Meiji 20 (1887). It began by accommodating people who came to visit Shiba Onsen for mackerel fishing, and while undergoing renovations, historical items such as old room number plaques and black telephones remain to convey the history.

All guest rooms are Japanese-style rooms, including rooms with alcoves and rooms overlooking the port. The official website warns in advance that the building is old and has some inconveniences, so it is better to think of it as an inn where you can enjoy the atmosphere of an old-fashioned spa rather than the facilities of a new hotel.

Guest rooms have LCD TVs and amenities, and toilets, washrooms, and public baths are shared. Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is until 10:00. Payment is cash only. If you have a preference regarding the facilities or the view from your room, please let the inn know when making your reservation.

A public bath drawn from the hot spring source

Maruhon Ryokan’s indoor bath is the “Oyu type” of the three hot spring sources in Shimofuro Onsenkyo. It is an acidic, sulfur-containing, sodium-chloride, and sulfate spring, and the inn offers a public bath with water flowing directly from the source.

However, the official website also states that if the amount or temperature of the hot spring water is unstable, tap water or hot water may be added to adjust the temperature to a suitable state for bathing. Don’t just think “100% natural hot springs”, but respect the management of the inn according to the conditions of the day.

Hot springs are highly acidic and may feel hot. Please take a short bath depending on your physical condition and avoid taking an unreasonably long bath. If you have a chronic illness or skin condition, it is best to consult your doctor or hotel in advance, rather than making a self-judgment based on the expectation of medical effects.

Seasonal dishes featuring seafood from the Shimokita Peninsula

The meal plan includes dishes made with ingredients from the Shimokita Peninsula and Aomori Prefecture. Seasonally, we also offer plans that focus on northern sea urchin, abalone, and monkfish.

The monkfish full course consists of sashimi, tomo-ae, fried chicken, hot pot, etc. It takes time to secure the ingredients, so early reservations are required. The availability period changes depending on the season and stock, so if you have a particular dish you want to try, please check the official website for the plan name and reservation deadline.

There are several plans available, including meals included all year round, breakfast only, and overnight stays without meals. If you have a food allergy, please let the inn know in the information on the reservation form. It is unconfirmed whether the cat will come to the eating area, and you should not feed Detchi-kun food from people.

From Shimokita Station by bus or car

The location is 113 Shimofuro, Kazamaura Village, Shimokita District, Aomori Prefecture. The nearest station is JR Shimokita Station, and the inn’s official website provides directions for taking the Shimokita Kotsu Bus Sai Line and getting off at the Shimofuro Onsen bus stop.

By car, it takes about 40 minutes from Shimokita Station and about 30 minutes from Oma-cho. You can also visit by public transportation, but please check the round-trip times in advance as the frequency and connections vary depending on the season. In winter, it is important to consider the impact of snow, frozen roads, and strong winds on traffic, and plan your itinerary with plenty of time.

If you are planning to stay multiple nights at Shimofuro Onsenkyo, you may also want to check the details of Kazamaura Village’s “Heartful Hot Springs Trip.” The target period, accommodation facilities, hot springs you can bathe in, and dietary requirements change depending on the plan, so be sure to check with the reservation company to avoid confusing them with regular plans.

This is not a pet-friendly accommodation.

On the official website, there is a notice that prohibits bringing pets inside the inn. It’s one thing for Detchi-kun to live there, but it’s another thing for travelers to be able to bring their cats and dogs with them.

If you are allergic to cats, please check before making a reservation to confirm Detchi-kun’s living range and whether we can provide a cat-free guest room. Even if the cat is not present, hair and allergens can remain on common areas and fabrics.

Summary

Maruhon Ryokan is a small hot-spring inn founded in Meiji 20, where guests can enjoy the building, Oyu-type waters of Shimofuro Onsen, and seafood from the Shimokita Peninsula. Kazamaura Village’s current guidance introduces it as an inn where the resident cat Detchi-kun, affectionately called the head of sales, welcomes guests.

The current contact range and guest-room visits cannot be confirmed in official information, so the classification is C. Do not treat your encounter with Detchi-kun as something you’ve been promised. Instead, make your time at the historic hot spring inn your main goal, and when you do meet him, prioritize the cat’s wishes and safety.
