“Fujinoyu” in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture is a long-established inn with 8 rooms located in Asama Onsen. This is a quiet inn that focuses on hot springs fed directly from the source and meals served in the room, and the “resident cat Mya” who walks around the grounds soothes the guests.

It is characterized by a building that has been expanded and renovated since the Meiji period, and a space that incorporates Matsumoto’s crafts. You may encounter cats during your stay, not at a large-scale inn, but while enjoying hot springs and meals in peace.

Mya, the cat staying at the inn, patrols the premises

Mya is a resident cat with folded ears. In the 2026 Rakuten Travel resident cat ranking, this cat is introduced as a friendly cat that walks all over the grounds every day and approaches guests while purring when the cat spots them. The existence of Mya is also posted on the official website.

This site classifies it as B because there is specific information that Mya approaches people. On the other hand, we cannot confirm information about entering the guest room. Please understand that they are resident cats and are free to use the premises, so you may not be able to meet them at any time.

If you meet Mya at the entrance or in the garden, choose where you stand carefully so that you do not drive the cat toward the road. When a cat approaches you, stay low and wait to see what the cat is doing before touching it.

Hot springs fed directly from the source and private baths

Official website introduces Fujinoyu’s private bath with hot spring water flowing directly from the source as a feature of Fujinoyu. Guest rooms include Japanese-style rooms in the main building, as well as guest rooms with semi-open-air baths, and each room has different facilities and capacity.

The building includes historic wooden parts, and stairs are used to access the guest rooms. There are conditions for each room type, such as the Japanese-style rooms in the main building not allowing preschool children aged 6 or younger to stay. If you have concerns about using stairs or are traveling with children, please check the guest room page before booking.

With a total of 8 rooms, it is suitable for people who want to spend a quiet time in the hot spring and in their room without having to move around inside the inn. The official website also states that they do not accept consecutive nights, so please be careful when planning your itinerary for sightseeing in Matsumoto.

Dinner and breakfast both served in the room

The official website states that the meals incorporate ingredients from Shinshu, and that dinner and breakfast are served in the room. The unique feature of this meal is that you can enjoy it in the comfort of your own room without having to go to a shared dining hall.

The menu changes depending on the season and plan. Please check the latest accommodation conditions at the time of booking, including allergies, meal start times, and non-consecutive nights. Mya is not described as a cat that visits guest rooms, so do not lure the cat with food in the hope of meeting it during a meal in your room.

About 25 minutes by bus from Matsumoto Station

The location is Asama Onsen 3-13-5. Approximately 25 minutes by bus bound for Asama Onsen from JR Matsumoto Station, and approximately 5 minutes on foot after getting off at Asama Onsen. By car, it takes about 20 minutes from Matsumoto IC or Azusagawa Smart IC, and there are 8 free parking lots.

Matsumoto Castle is approximately 10 minutes by car. The location makes it easy to combine city sightseeing with hot springs. Although the area is said to have little snow in the winter, be sure to prepare winter tires in case it freezes or snows.

Summary

Fujinoyu is a cat inn where you can quietly enjoy hot springs fed by the source and enjoy meals in your room while waiting for encounters with Mya as she strolls around the grounds. Rather than searching for cats inside the inn, it is better to enjoy the time as a hot spring inn and interact with Mya at her own pace if you meet her at the entrance or garden.
