Gensenkan is a hot-spring inn deep in the Shiobara Onsen area of Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture, with three of its own hot-spring sources. The official website currently states that the inn carries out rescue work for cats and other animals and that animals are present inside the inn.
In addition to the hot springs, the fact that rescued cats live in the same building as people is a big reason to research this inn as a cat inn. On the other hand, encounters with cats are not guaranteed as accommodation services. Prioritize the cat’s will and physical condition, and think of it as a place where you can spend time together quietly only when the cat shows up.

A hot spring inn where rescued cats live inside the inn
Gensenkan is involved in cat rescue activities for cats and other animals on its official website, and advises those with allergies to be careful as there are animals inside the inn. This is an inn where cats are not just kept for decoration or to attract customers, but are also a living space for the rescued animals as well as lodging facilities.
The official blog from September 2024 records that eight cats were walking freely inside the inn at that time. Cats such as Koharu, Shichizo, and Honey were also introduced. However, as the number of animals and the status of individuals may change, it cannot be determined that there will still be 8 animals in 2026.
While there is evidence that cats live inside the inn and appear in common areas, we cannot confirm the current official announcement that cats come to guests’ guest rooms. Neko Yado Research classifies it as B “inside the inn, where you can interact in a dedicated space.”
time with resident cats is basically “I’d be happy to meet you”
It’s possible to meet a cat walking inside the inn, but there are no guaranteed times or petting programs. Avoid actions such as waking up a sleeping cat, chasing them, picking them up, or giving them food, and give priority to the accommodation staff’s guidance.
Be sure to ask the staff about the cat’s name, personality, and where you can touch it that day. Don’t use a flash when taking pictures, and don’t chase the cat if it tries to leave.
It is officially stated that there are animals inside the inn. If you have a cat allergy, please check the distance from the guest room and dining area, as well as cleaning methods, before making a reservation, and if your symptoms are severe, please consider not forcing yourself to use the property.
Shiobara Motoyu Onsen where you can enjoy 3 private hot springs
Gensenkan is an inn that has its own sulfur springs from three different sources. The color of the hot water may change from milky white to green to black, and it is said to be a cloudy hot spring whose appearance changes depending on the natural conditions.
Inside the Inn has multiple baths where you can enjoy hot springs flowing directly from the source. Opening hours and gender classification may change depending on the bathing area, so please check the instructions upon arrival. If you are not used to hot spring water with strong ingredients, avoid taking long baths and take breaks and hydrate according to your physical condition.
Hot springs are another reason for your stay that is not dependent on meeting a cat. The strength of this inn is that even on days when the cats are not seen, you can still spend time as if you were at a hot spring resort in the mountains.
Guest room mainly Japanese-style rooms
According to the official information, there are multiple guest room types in the main building and annex, including Japanese-style rooms and Japanese-Western rooms. The size, view, and facilities such as toilets and bathrooms vary depending on the room, so please check the room conditions when making a reservation.
We cannot confirm that the inn’s resident cats are allowed to enter the guest rooms. Gensenkan also has information on special guest rooms and pet hotels where you can stay with your pet, but this is a separate arrangement from staying in a room with a resident cat. If you plan to bring your own pet, be sure to check with the inn in advance about the species they support, fees, required items, and rules for moving inside the inn.
Local ingredients and hot spring porridge
Meal plans feature dishes that incorporate local ingredients. Dinner content changes depending on the season and plan, and for breakfast, porridge made with hot spring water is one of the inn’s specialties.
Meal venue, serving time, and allergy support vary depending on the reservation plan. Even if you are staying at an inn with cats or other animals inside the inn, please do not expect them to come near you during meals. Avoid sharing human food with the cat.
Reservation-based transportation available
The location is 101 Nasushiobara Yumoto Shiobara. If you are using public transportation, the official transportation guide advises that reservations are required for pick-up and drop-off from Shiobara Onsen Bus Terminal. Flight times, reservation deadlines, and holidays are subject to change, so be sure to check them when making your accommodation reservation.
By car, head towards Shiobara Onsen Village from the Nishinasuno-Shiobara Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. Mountainous areas experience ice and snow depending on the season, so it is essential to check the necessary equipment such as winter tires and road information in winter.
The official FAQ states that you can stay alone except during peak seasons. Since it is necessary to check the dates and plans that can actually be reserved for one person on the reservation screen, “Suitable for solo travelers” is added as a conditional attribute.

However, the number of cats, the places you can meet them, and the times you can interact with them are not fixed, and you cannot check guest room visits. It’s best to make the hot spring itself the main purpose of your trip, and if you meet a cat, let the cat choose the distance.
