Beppu Kokura’s “Hozanso” is a hot spring inn that prominently features on its official website that cats live there. There are two buildings, a main building and an annex, where you can enjoy smooth private hot springs, private hot springs, and a hell steaming experience.
Fuku, Ten, and Mugicha patrol inside the inn
The official cat introduction includes the odd-eyed “Fuku,” the large and friendly “Ten,” and the spoiled cat “Mugicha.” The cats freely patrol inside the inn and the grounds. Ten likes to be patted on the butt, and Fuku is said to be lucky if petted.
This site classifies it as B because it shows a specific interaction inside the inn. However, the inn itself explains that cats sleep for a long time and do not necessarily come when called. I cannot confirm the instructions to enter the guest room. If you encounter one in a hallway or entrance, be careful not to close the door to keep the cat in the guest room or wake a sleeping cat.
Different ways to enjoy hot springs in the main building and annex
The main building mainly offers Japanese-style rooms with open-air baths fed directly from the hot spring; room sizes and views vary. Guests in the annex’s Japanese-style rooms have access to a private indoor bath for one group. There are also private open-air baths, private indoor baths, and a ganbanyoku stone-bathing facility with an indoor bath, making it easier to enjoy the hot springs privately.
The main building and annex are across the city street from each other. There is no guest room on the 1st floor of the annex, so if you are concerned about moving up the stairs, please ask about the 1st floor of the main building when making a reservation over the phone. Rooms and floors can only be reserved by telephone.
Hot spring creative cuisine and hell steaming
Dinner is creative hot spring cuisine that incorporates steam from the source and seasonal ingredients from Oita Prefecture. The menu changes depending on the plan and purchase, and the main building has a private dining rooms, while the annex has a common room. Guests can bring their own ingredients and experience Jigokumushi within a designated time. If you have a food allergy or will be arriving after 7pm, be sure to let the inn know in advance.
The location is Kokura Group 4, Beppu City. It is approximately 2 minutes by car from Beppu IC and Jigoku Meguri, and there are 15 free parking spaces in 3 locations on the premises. The inn is generally closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, but please check the latest business days.
