In the mountains of Okushizu, up the Abe River from the Shizuoka area, there is a guesthouse where you can enjoy cats, hot springs, and country cuisine all at once. This is Yunohana.

The official website states that there are four cats living there, including resident cat Chacha, and that interacting with the free-spirited cats is a fun part of your stay. Guest-room visits remain unconfirmed, so it is classified as B. The inn itself highlights cat interaction as part of the stay.

Four cats, including resident cat Chacha

Official website introduces Yunohana as “an inn where cats live.”This is a homely guesthouse where you will be welcomed by wood smoke and cats.

Locations and times where you can interact are not indicated as a fixed service. If you see a cat inside the inn, don’t chase it or block the aisle, just wait for it to approach. Since the cats live freely, there is no guarantee that you will be able to meet all four cats.

It is also officially stated that the first resident cat, Mi-chan, passed away in 2021.Old travel articles may differ from the current cat composition, so it is important to use the current official information as the standard.

Take a family bath in the rich sulfur springs

Umegashima Onsen, where Yunohana is located, is a hot spring area located in the mountains upstream of the Abe River. According to the official information, the spring quality is alkaline simple sulfur spring. It has a smooth texture and is known as a hot spring for beautiful skin.

The bathroom has one family bath. This five-room guesthouse has a bath that guests take turns using, rather than the large communal bath of a major hot spring hotel, so be sure to check usage times and private reservation methods when you check in.

Homemade country cuisine using local ingredients

The meals are mainly homemade country cuisine using Shizuoka ingredients. In addition to the regular dishes, you will also be introduced to additional dishes that use mountain ingredients such as amago, deer, and wild boar. The menu changes depending on the season and stock, so if there is a particular dish you would like to try, please let the inn know when making your reservation.

There are 5 guest rooms in total, with a total capacity of 18 people. With a large hall, table tennis, and space for children, this is a homely inn that has been in operation for half a century, spanning three generations of parents and children. Suitable for people who value spending time as a family in a mountain village rather than luxurious facilities.

Bringing your dog and interacting with the inn’s cats are separate matters

Yunohana is also a place where you can stay with your dog in the guest room. However, there are conditions for accepting pets, and this does not mean your dog may freely interact with the inn’s cats. If you’re bringing your dog, be sure to check the current rules, including consideration for cats and other guests.

If you have a cat allergy or if you have a companion who doesn’t like cats, please consult the inn in advance. Make sure everyone in your travel group understands that this is an environment where cats will live before making a reservation.

Things to check before making a reservation

  • It is possible to interact with cats, but the time and number of cats you can meet is not guaranteed.
  • We cannot confirm the official statement that the cat will come to the guest room.
  • Please check the monthly notice for business days.
  • Please check with the inn regarding how to use the family bath and bathing hours.
  • There are conditions for accepting pets.
  • Because it is a mountainous area, you need to be prepared for the road and weather depending on the season.

Summary

Yunohana is a cat inn where guests can visit the four cats as they go about their daily lives, rather than displaying them as decorations. In addition to interacting with cats, you can enjoy Umegashima’s sulfur springs, mountain ingredients, and an environment surrounded by river sounds as a journey.

It is suitable for people who want to relax while feeling the presence of cats in a mountain guesthouse, rather than seeking an experience where a cat will always sit on their lap.
