Cats that visit the guest room may climb onto the bed or bag. It’s a cute scene, but rather than forcing the cat to move, it’s important to first clean up the objects that would be a problem for the cat to get on.

Store before the cat comes
Place medications, food, accessories, cables, and clothing in closed bags or drawers. Don’t leave your suitcase open; make sure the cat hasn’t gotten inside before closing it.
If you pull out the package after the cat gets on it, you may startle it or damage its claws. Be proactive and prepare your environment.
In particular, hair ties, medicine sheets, desiccants, earphones, sewing tools, and souvenir food items are small and easy to overlook. Check not only the floor, but also side tables and open pockets. Do not leave wet towels or yukata belts unattended; place them in the designated area at your accommodation.
If the cat gets on the bed
If the hotel allows cats to use the bed, watch over them without scolding them or picking them up. If you do not want a cat to enter the bedding, please ask about a guest room that does not allow cats when making a reservation.
If you want to go to bed or make your bed, talk to the staff instead of inviting them with snacks. Avoid pushing the cat’s body or pulling its legs or tail.
If there is a possibility that the cat has crawled into the bedding, do not forcefully fold the bedding or sit on it. Visually check the bedding bit by bit, and if you can’t find it, call a staff member.
If the cat climbs onto clothing or equipment
Do not pull the clothes too hard to get rid of the cat that is resting on the clothes. If you need something urgently, ask a staff member, and if you have alternative clothing, wait until the cat leaves.
Turn off your laptop and camera and store them in their cases before the cat visits. Do not leave hot devices, tripods that can easily fall over, or charging mobile batteries near cats.
If the cat gets into your bag
If the cat gets into your bag or suitcase, don’t close the lid, don’t lift it, and leave space around it so the cat can get out on its own. If there is a possibility that the cat may have ingested something dangerous inside, leave the packaging and item name and notify the staff.
Before you leave, check inside your bag, between your clothes, and under your bed, and make sure no cat remains in the room before closing your luggage.
If you are concerned about allergies or hygiene
The possibility of cats getting on the bedding is a condition that should be checked before making a reservation. If you have a strong allergy, please ask the inn about whether there is a guest room where cats are not allowed, as well as the circulation of common areas and cleaning methods, and check with your doctor for medical decisions.
If you notice any dirt during your stay, please report it to the inn without using your own detergent or disinfectant. This is to avoid using the chemical products you bring in areas where the cat might lick it.
Five things to check before leaving the room
- The cat is not in the room, bathroom, or storage area.
- There is no cat in the bag or suitcase.
- All food, medicine, and small items have been recalled.
- Reported any abnormalities with the bedding or equipment to the inn.
- Before opening the door, check the movement of the resident cat in the hallway.
Do not request treatment for cats due to hair or dirt
Cats may shed hair in the guest room. Keep a clothes brush and storage bag handy and do not hold an adhesive lint roller near the cat. If you need to change the bedding, do not blame the cat; just report the situation to the inn.

Storage table before the cat comes
| Things | How to store |
|---|---|
| Medicines/Supplements | To zippered bags and cupboards |
| Food and beverages | Seal tightly and store in a location designated by the hotel |
| Charger/Earphones | Unplug the cable and put it in the case |
| Hair ties/strings | Check the number and put them in the accessory case |
| Cosmetics/Essential oils | Keep out of reach of cats in leak-proof containers |
| Camera/Lens | Return to storage where it will not fall |
Even if you only need to take your eyes off it for a little while, clean it up using the same procedure before going out or taking a bath.
Text requesting to leave
The cat is resting on the bed. I’m going to go out (to sleep) now, so please let me know how to get it out of the room safely.
Instead of picking him up yourself or leading him to the hallway with treats, use the inn’s procedures. If a cat gets into your luggage, please do not tilt your bag and notify the staff.
Summary
The best thing to do when the cat gets on your bed or luggage is to stow it in advance, rather than forcing it off. If you are in trouble, do not guide the cat on your own; leave it to the inn staff who know cats.
Note: Rules for use of cat guest rooms and treatment of bedding vary by inn.
