“Maroya”, located in Haruno-cho, Hamamatsu Tenryu Ward, Shizuoka Prefecture, is an inn where you can stay in a Japanese house built in the Taisho period. The host’s current listing states that the property has several cats that may roam in and out of the property.

This facility is not just for cats. This is a type of cat inn that is similar to daily life, where cats may appear of their own volition while staying in an old house.

Domestic cats may come into the house.

In the information provided by the host on Airbnb, it is announced that several cats live on the property and may come in and out of the property. There is also a notice that guests who like cats are welcome, so this is not a vacation rental where cats are completely prohibited.

However, we cannot confirm that the cat appears every time or enters the bedroom. Therefore, Neko Yado Research Institute classifies it as B “inside the inn, where you can interact in a dedicated space.”If a cat approaches, do not chase or pick it up, and check with the caretaker before using food or toys.

If you have a cat allergy, please discuss with the inn before making a reservation whether the place where cats usually enter, the management of bedding, and whether arrangements can be made to prevent cats from entering during your stay.

An inn renovated from a 100-year-old Japanese house

According to the Japan Folk House Restoration Association, the building was constructed in Taisho 14 and served as the home of a family working in forestry. After it had stood vacant for more than 20 years, the owner couple began restoring it in 2018.

Rather than having uniform facilities like a newly built hotel, this is an inn where you can experience an old Japanese house, including the wood, fittings, verandas, and rooms separated by sliding doors. Airbnb says it can accommodate up to 8 people, 2 bedrooms, 8 futons, and 1 bathroom. Although it is reserved for private use, the manager is on the premises.

There is also a cafe corner on the premises, and there may be people coming and going in the area. If you are looking for a completely unmanned and isolated building to rent, it is best to check the flow of traffic with the manager and cafe users in advance.

Self-catering stay using kitchen and stove

The inn has a kitchen, and simple cooking is possible. If requested, guidance on how to cook rice over a hearth is also provided. According to the introduction by the Japan Folk House Revitalization Association, meals are basically self-cooked, and it is said that catering using local ingredients can be utilized in some cases.

Meal service and catering may vary depending on the schedule. At the time of booking, please confirm the available kitchen utensils, where you can purchase ingredients, and the conditions for accepting catering. It is also important not to share human food with the cat or to guide the cat into the kitchen while cooking.

Things to prepare for an old folk house in the mountains

The information provided by the host states that there is no screen door and insects may get in depending on the season. Rather than expecting the same airtightness and soundproofing as a hotel in a city, this inn is an old folk house in the mountains where you have to dress appropriately and be prepared for insects.

For consideration of the neighborhood, guests are asked to keep noise down after 9 PM. Even when staying with multiple people, please be mindful of nighttime conversations, music, and vehicle traffic.

Approximately a 26-minute drive from Tengu-dani Nitta Station

The location is 907 Ryoya, Haruno-cho, Tenryu-ku, Hamamatsu. The Japan Folk House Revitalization Association states that it is about 1 hour by car from Hamamatsu city and about 26 minutes by car from Tenryu Futamata Station. There is a parking space on the premises, but the location will be provided according to instructions after reservation.

Since the current route accessible by public transportation alone cannot be confirmed, Neko Yado Research classifies this as “car recommended.” Please check with the manager regarding road conditions and ease of travel for the final section during winter or rainy days.

Summary

Maroya is an inn where you can rent out a Japanese house that is currently being renovated and spend time in the mountains while using the kitchen and stove. The cat is not a staff member who is promised to serve customers, but rather lives on the premises and occasionally enters the house.

This is a lodging where you are NOT sure to meet a cat, and is suitable for people who do not have fixed schedules, enjoy the experience of staying in an old folk house, and only quietly share the same space when a cat shows up.
